Two arrested in fire that killed Chassidy Broadstone

Brendan Daviduk, Patricia Zarlingo face murder, arson charges

WARREN — Two people arrested Wednesday afternoon in connection to the fatal Jan. 19 fire on Nevada Avenue NW have previous criminal records and are married, court records indicate.

Warren police Chief Eric Merkel confirmed Wednesday that Brendan Michael Daviduk, 28, and Patricia Ann Zarlingo, 27, were being held without bond in connection to the arson and death of a 16-year-old Warren G. Harding student.

Police will provide more information about the arrests of Daviduk and Zarlingo today during a 2:30 p.m. news conference at the police station, Merkel said.

Charges are pending in Warren Municipal Court for murder and aggravated arson, Trumbull County jail records show. The fire killed Chassidy Broadstone, 16, a high school junior.

Two other teen girls escaped from a second-story window as the house burned. One girl was hospitalized.

The early morning blaze was ruled arson and treated as a homicide by police, who released photos of a possible suspect and a large sport utility vehicle.

The chief did not respond to an attempt to reach him with a follow up question on whether the photos helped lead to the arrests.

Broadstone’s father, Roger, told the newspaper he would rather not comment on the arrests at this time.

An attempt to reach Broadstone’s mother on Wednesday evening was unsuccessful.

PAST CHARGES

Records show Daviduk and Zarlingo were granted a marriage license in Mahoning County in April 2021.

They were arrested together in late 2015 on charges of aggravated robbery, related to an incident at 417 Hall St. NW, records show.

On Feb. 4, 2016, Zarlingo and Daviduk pleaded no contest to petty theft charges, both misdemeanors, in Warren Municipal Court.

They both were credited with time served, Zarlingo for two days and Daviduk for three, and ordered to pay $900 in restitution. They completed their probation on Feb. 4, 2018, records show.

In 2015, records show the couple lived on Union Street in Youngstown.

Daviduk, along with his cousin and another man, was a suspect in a series of thefts from vehicles in Boardman in 2012, according to Vindicator Printing Company archives. Daviduk pleaded guilty to burglary and carrying a concealed weapon, while two charges of receiving stolen property and a charge of possession of criminal tools were dismissed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge John Durkin sentenced Daviduk to four years in prison, with credit for 166 days. Daviduk served about six months before being granted an early release.

MEMORIES

Chassidy’s funeral was Sunday at the Salvation Army in Warren, where she regularly did volunteer work.

In January, she was remembered with a balloon launch at Packard Park in Warren, attended by some 200 people.

She was described by teachers and peers as being outgoing, loyal, and protective of her friends and family.

The state Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau, Warren fire and police departments, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agency and the Trumbull County Medical Examiners’ Office investigated the fire and Chassidy’s death.

In the days before the fire, a strong odor of gasoline was noticeable outside the house, an adult woman who lived there had told police, according to a city police report.

The woman, who was not home at the time of the fire, said she had been

having issues with two men.
