Hubbard receives $50,000 EPA grant

To be used for lead mapping

HUBBARD — The city has been awarded a $50,000 Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grant to be used for lead line mapping.

Mayor Ben Kyle said at Monday’s meeting the mapping grant will be used by the city for future checking for lead in lines.

He said in addition to the city getting lines checked for lead and replaced through a different project, there will be a separate project for mapping of future lines for lead.

“The two projects run parallel. The mapping will help the city identify lead lines in the future. We have already identified several lead lines that will get replaced this winter and the first quarter of next year. The mapping grant will help us with the lines we don’t know about,” Kyle said.

Kyle said bids will be going out this month for the lead service lines replacement project. He said the project is for replacing lines at 23 properties and two alternate lists with five properties in each list. What will be added will depend on bid prices.

He said there was $180,000 in H20 state grant money for that project.

Kyle said the waterline project has been months in the making, with Gov. Mike DeWine mentioning Hubbard and other cities in the state as part of the H2O programs.

An H2O grant and an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency revolving loan fund of up to $225,000 will help provide financial assistance to get replacements for any identified lead or galvanized lines on either residential or city sides of the waterline.

Kyle said Hubbard was among the first five communities to receive the H2O grant of $180,000 for waterline replacements.

Council also gave final reading for pay increases for the police chief from $60,000 to $75,000 effective Sept. 1 and the wastewater superintendent from $62,500 to $67,500 effective Jan. 1.

In other matters, council:

• Heard from Kyle that new playground equipment has been installed at Waugh Park with a lot of activity taking place with the warmer weather;

• Reported the Eagle Joint Fire District swore in Scott Thomas and Mike Rudinskt as two new fire lieutenants;

• Announced annual Christmas parade is set for 5 p.m. Dec. 3 starting at the high school;

• Announced smoke detectors are available for city residents and are available at the mayor’s office.
