YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Police Department says 16-year-old Isiah Walker was shot to death about 8 p.m. Tuesday, apparently in or near Homestead Park on the South Side.

The boy made it to his home in the 700 block of Wilbur Avenue, where he died, despite officers and ambulance personnel performing life-saving measures on Walker when they arrived, according to a Youngstown police news release.

The park is about a block east of the boy's home.

Police were sent to the 700 block of Wilbur for reports of gunfire and a gunshot victim, police said.

"Mr. Walker was believed to be in or near the park at the time of the shooting," the news release states. Police said that information "coupled with the warm weather, leads us to believe that others were around," Capt. Jason Simon of the police department stated.

"We are asking anyone who was present and saw or heard anything around that time please speak with YPD to help bring this case to a quick resolution," he added. The police department and Mahoning County Coroner's Office are investigating the shooting.

Police urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE or the Youngstown Police Department at 330-746-8YPD. Tips leading to an arrest in the case are eligible for a monetary reward.

This is the eight homicide of the year in Youngstown. The seventh homicide was May 15 when Eric Gibbs, 42, was found shot to death in an upstairs apartment in the 4200 block of Shirley Road on the South Side.

Another teen killed in or near Homestead Park was Brandon Wesley, 19. He was shot to death in July 2020. Friends of Wesley told police the gunfire came from someone riding a dirt bike. Wesley was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he died.

Wesley's mother, Lynette Wesley, later filed a federal lawsuit against the city, alleging that police and ambulance personnel failed to provide timely medical care.
