Police activity returns to Packard Street home

WARREN — One month after a shooting at the same house, city police detectives on Friday night were investigating a Packard Street shooting.

Police responded to the call around 7:20 p.m. Officers would not confirm if anyone was injured — but said shots were fired toward a house.

After dusk, a detective searched the steps of 860 Packard St. with a flashlight. The same house was the scene of a shooting in which three people received nonlife-threatening injuries May 16.

Bystanders watching from the end of Packard Street reported seeing eight cones in the street and front yards of several houses, which they believed were markers for shell casings.

“We’re sick and tired of it,” a neighborhood resident said.

Donald Allgood said he was outside cooking at his home several blocks away when he heard a large number of shots. He said he believed there were at least 20 shots fired.

“I’m a veteran, so I know what gunshots sound like,” Allgood said.

A group gathered on the steps of an apartment building at the corner of Packard and Mahoning Avenue would not comment on the night’s events but used colorful language to chide what they believe was insufficient work done by the police.

An officer at the scene, however, said neighbors were not forthcoming with information and that a supervisor was getting video footage of the incident.

The victims of the May 16 shooting at 680 Packard St. were identified by police as Deborah Croff, who lives at the address; Isaiah Marquis Thompkins of Niles and Mikai L. Frank of Autumn Drive NW, Warren.

That incident as well as several other recent shootings in the city remain under investigation.
