During a week when Ohio has recorded record-high numbers of COVID-19 cases among the general public, the number of infections among nursing home staff members also rose.
The Ohio Department of Health's COVID-19 website says the state's nursing homes and assisted-living facilities saw an increase of staff cases from 1,000 last week to 1,306 this week.
The number of patient cases declined by 13 -- from 895 last week to 882 this week.
The number of deaths among nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties rose by seven this week, one of the larger increases in recent months.
Columbiana County saw an increase of four deaths associated with nursing homes and assisted-living facilities this week, rising from 82 deaths last week to 86. Deaths at Mahoning County facilities rose by two this week -- from 296 last week to 298. Trumbull County saw an increase of one death -- from 167 deaths last week to 168.
An accurate total of current COVID-19 infections at nursing homes in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties this week does not appear to be available because the number of COVID-19 infections reported on the ODH web site may not have been updated.
For example, one Mahoning County nursing home with a large number of infections last week has the same number this week, suggesting the data was not updated.
Mahoning County had about 20 other facilities listed last week with a relatively low number of cases, and about 20 facilities also are listed this week with a low number of cases.
Trumbull County and Columbiana County facilities listed this week continue to have a small number of virus cases.
At the three area prisons, the number of staff cases fluctuated. The private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown saw a decline of four cases from nine to five. The Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown saw a decline of three staff cases from four to one. And the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg saw an increase of three cases from three to six.
There continues to be just one inmate case among the three prisons. It is at NEOCC.
