The number of COVID-19 cases rose at several Mahoning County nursing homes this week; at the same time, the number of cases rose dramatically among the general population in Ohio.
The biggest surge among Mahoning County nursing homes was at the Canfield Acres LLC Windsor House at Canfield nursing home on state Route 446. The Ohio Department of Health indicated on its website that Canfield Acres had no COVID-19 cases last week but said it has 21 cases this week -- 11 among patients and 10 among staff.
The Greenbriar Center nursing home in Boardman has had high case numbers for several weeks and remains high this week. The facility has three patient cases and seven staff cases.
It had 15 patient cases and six staff cases two weeks ago. It is not certain how many case it had last week because the numbers the ODH reported last week did not appear to be updated.
Masternick Memorial Healthcare Center Nursing Home in New Middletown has seven patient cases and three staff cases this week. The Assumption Village Nursing Home in North Lima has three patient cases and six staff cases this week.
The Inn at Walker Mill assisted-living facility in Boardman has three patient cases and three staff cases this week. The Hampton Woods Nursing Center nursing home in Poland has no patient cases and five staff cases this week.
Windsor House at Omni Manor nursing home in Youngstown has one patient case and four staff cases this week, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
Cases at Trumbull County long-term care facilities such as nursing homes rose by a smaller amount. The Community Skilled Healthcare Center nursing home in Warren has two patient cases and six staff cases this week. Other facilities had relatively low numbers. And Columbiana County facilities continued to have only a few cases.
The number of cases at all Ohio nursing homes rose significantly this week, especially staff cases, which rose from 1,306 last week to 2,380 this week, rising 82 percent. Patient cases rose from 882 to 1,310, an increase of 49 percent.
The number of deaths at nursing homes rose from 86 to 87 in Columbiana County and rose from 298 to 300 in Mahoning County. The number remained at 168 in Trumbull County. The number of nursing home deaths across the state is 8,255 this week, up 49 from last week.
The number of COVID-19 cases among staff at area prisons also rose this week.
The number of staff cases rose from five to 10 at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown. The number rose from one to 11 at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, and the number rose from six to eight at the Trumbull Correctional Institute in Leavittsburg.
Only one inmate currently has the virus at any of the three prisons. That inmate is at NEOCC.
The number of new COVID-19 cases among the general population in Ohio was more than 20,000 Wednesday, smashing the previous record number of new cases for a day.
