WARREN -- A man now charged with murder was wanted on a warrant on gun-related charges after missing a court hearing just two days before a man was killed Wednesday, according to police and court records.
Cedrick Patterson, 40, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Warren Municipal Court to charges of murder in relation to the death in a high-rise apartment complex at 250 Tod Ave. NW on Wednesday.
He is being held without bond in the Trumbull County jail, where he was booked in just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to jail records.
Patterson was jailed there from Nov. 21 to 23 after an incident Nov. 21 in the same building, on the seventh floor, where blood was found Wednesday during the murder investigation, according to police and jail records.
The victim's body was found on the fifth floor of the building, but a bloody "murder scene" was discovered on the walls and in the stairwell to the seventh floor, according to a Trumbull County 911 call log.
The victim was pronounced dead around 11 a.m. after first responders could not resuscitate him. Family members and a Trumbull County 911 report states the victim was Bernard Owens.
In the prior incident, Warren police officers were called shortly before 2 a.m. Nov. 21 to the seventh floor of the complex after reports a man known as "Smooth" fired a shot on the floor.
Officers said that Patterson was "highly intoxicated," holding a beer and yelling at officers, the report states. The man dropped the beer and "began flailing his arms" and slamming his body against the door of his apartment.
When officers decided to cuff him, he declared he had a weapon and officers removed a handgun loaded with one round in the chamber and five in the magazine, the report states.
Officers learned Patterson was not authorized to possess a weapon because of a previous felonious assault conviction in Cuyahoga County. Patterson was charged in municipal court with having weapons under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, discharging firearms and disorderly conduct. He pleaded not guilty Nov. 22, and on Nov. 23 he was released from jail after posting $1,250 of a $12,500 bond.
He was scheduled to appear Nov. 29 for a hearing on the charges, but did not show up, according to court records. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
When he was arraigned on the murder charge Thursday, his not-guilty plea to the Nov. 21 charges was continued.
Patterson is scheduled to appear Dec. 9 before Judge Terry F. Ivanchak in municipal court in connection to all of the charges filed against him.
Patterson also is facing a charge of felonious assault with an offense date of Nov. 18, according to court records. A report regarding the circumstances for the charge was not available, but court records list a Parkman Road man as a victim in the case. The charge wasn't filed in municipal court until Thursday.
Patterson had not been booked into the Trumbull County jail before the Nov. 21 incident.
The death Wednesday marks the city's fifth homicide of the year; last year, the city recorded 16.
