The Greenbriar Center Nursing Home on South Avenue in Boardman, which had four active patient cases of COVID-19 last week and five active staff cases, saw its numbers rise to 15 patient cases and six staff cases this week.
It was the only area nursing home to see a significant jump in cases this week, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health. About 20 other Mahoning County facilities are listed as having current cases, but they each have a relatively small number, and it is unknown whether those numbers are up to date.
Because Greenbriar's numbers changed this week compared to last week, it is likely the numbers have been updated.
The ODH explained earlier this week, however, that "manual reporting errors at two laboratories" resulted in an undercount of 7,699 COVID-19 cases in the state between March 7 and Dec. 3, and the state is processing the errant cases and adding them to the current totals.
For example, the state added 1,725 of the missed cases to its numbers Tuesday. It is unknown whether the nursing home cases the ODH reported Wednesday were affected by the the correction to the data.
A call to Greenbriar Center Nursing Home on Thursday afternoon was not returned.
Trumbull County long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and assisted-living facilities have a combined five cases this week, two among patients and three among staff at four facilities. Columbiana County facilities continue to have a low number of cases.
The number of deaths associated with area long-term care facilities rose by two cases this week, one each in Trumbull County and Columbiana County. The number of deaths in Mahoning County remained at 296, while Trumbull County deaths rose to 167 and Columbiana County deaths rose to 82.
Among all Ohio nursing homes, a sizable increase in staff cases of the virus was reported this week. The number of staff cases rose from 859 to 1,000. The number of patient cases rose from 886 to 895.
It is unknown whether missed COVID-19 cases being added to the state's totals this week affected the statewide nursing home totals.
The three area prisons saw small changes in the number of cases involving staff members. The private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown saw its staff cases rise from seven to nine, while the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown had a reduction in staff cases from seven to four. Trumbull Correctional Institution saw its staff cases decline from four to three. NEOCC has one inmate case, and the two other prisons have none.
