Giveaway honors slain city woman
WARREN — A soup and sandwich giveaway will take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the SMART Food Store, 2142 Youngstown Road, for anyone in need of a meal.
The giveaway is being done to honor Jolonda Murry, 27, who was shot while driving a car on Dec. 22, 2020, on Halleck Avenue in Youngstown, between Logan Avenue and Elm Street, on the city’s North Side.
She died several days later.
“This is something she wanted to do for a long time,” according to Jolonda’s mother, Sheauntie Murry. “She talked about starting a giveaway for homeless women. She wanted to get a van, so she could pick up homeless and other women that were in need to take them where they could get help.”
Murry does not want the memory of her daughter to be about gun violence.
“We want her memory to be about doing things for each other,” Murry said. “That’s what she wanted to do.”
This weekend’s event will be the first of several giveaways done in Jolonda’s name.
Murry said the ongoing project is expected to be done under the name of Lady Jo’s Brown Bag.
Jolonda is survived by three children, two of whom are being raised by her parents.
“This is the first giveaway that has been done since her passing,” Murry said.
Gregory D. Richardson II, 36, was indicted on aggravated murder with three gun specifications in connection with Murry’s death. He also was indicted on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one of criminal damaging or endangering.
Murry’s death was Youngstown’s 28th homicide in 2020.
