Ohio experienced a near 50 percent decline in the number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the past five weeks.
But the state's cases are more than three-and-a-half times what the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider to be high-transmission areas for COVID-19. The CDC number for high transmission is 100 cases per 100,000. It recommends face masks while indoors at public places in those areas, but it's not a mandate.
The 359.1 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents for the time between Oct. 14 and Wednesday is down from 419.2 cases per 100,000 last week.
Two weeks ago, it was at 507.4 COVID-19 cases per 100,000, 560.5 cases per 100,000 three weeks ago, 616.7 cases per 100,000 four weeks ago and 698.7 cases five weeks ago.
The number of cases per 100,000 in the state has dropped 48.6 percent in those five weeks.
It's also at its lowest level since Aug. 26 when the Ohio Department of Health reported 338.1 cases per 100,000 residents.
But the state's number this week is almost 19 times higher than it was July 8, nearly four months ago, at 19.2 cases per 100,000.
For the first time since Aug. 26, no counties among the state's 88 have cases above 1,000 per 100,000 residents.
The highest was Guernsey at 962.1 and the lowest was Hamilton at 236.6.
Five weeks ago, 30 counties had more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 residents.
Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana had higher rates of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents than the state.
Mahoning is 43rd in the state this week with 439.9 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.
Last week, it was 39th with 538.7 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was 40th two weeks ago with 652 cases per 100,000 residents, 55th two weeks ago with 670.4 cases per 100,000 residents, 53rd four weeks ago with 703.2 cases per 100,000 and 59th five weeks ago with 714.5 COVID-19 cases per 100,000.
Trumbull is at 54th this week with 382.4 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was 59th last week with 425.3 cases per 100,000 residents.
It also was 59th two weeks ago with 541 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents. It was 61st three weeks ago with 621.8 cases per 100,000, 65th four weeks ago with 611.7 cases per 100,000 and 76th five weeks ago with 561.2 cases per 100,000.
Columbiana is at 12th this week with 586.9 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was fifth last week with 750.9 cases.
It was ninth two weeks ago with 839.2 cases per 100,000 residents, 24th three weeks ago with 818.6 cases per 100,000 residents, 28th four weeks ago with 860.8 cases per 100,000 and 34th five weeks ago with 922.6 cases per 100,000 residents.
The ODH measures cases per 100,000 residents among counties to get a fair comparison because total cases would result in more-populous counties ranking higher.
