For the third straight week, the number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 Ohioans declined even though the state is more than five times above what is considered to be a high-transmission area.
The 507.4 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents for the period between Sept. 30 and Wednesday is down from 560.5 cases last week.
Ohio was at 616.7 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 two weeks ago and at 698.7 cases three weeks ago. The state was at 683.3 cases per 100,000 four weeks ago and 582.4 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents five weeks ago.
The state's number this week is more than 26 times higher than it was July 8 at 19.2 cases per 100,000.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers 100 cases per 100,000 to be high-transmission areas for COVID-19 and recommends face masks while indoors at public places.
Ohio has five counties with more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 residents with the lowest among the state's 88 counties being Holmes with 313.9 cases per 100,000, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
Only three weeks ago, 30 counties were higher than 1,000 cases per 100,000 residents.
The delta variant among the unvaccinated, which spreads quickly, almost entirely is to blame for the increase Ohio in cases since mid-July, said Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, ODH director, who added it appears that surge has plateaued.
Columbiana shot up to ninth this week in the ranking of the state's 88 counties for COVID-19 cases per 100,000 while Mahoning went up 15 slots even though its cases declined. Trumbull went down two positions this week even with a 13 percent decline in cases from a week ago.
Mahoning is at 40th in the state this week with 652 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was 55th last week with 670.4 cases per 100,000 residents and 53rd two weeks ago with 703.2 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was 59th three weeks ago with 714.5 COVID-19 cases per 100,000, 68th four weeks ago with 630.6 COVID-19 cases and 71st five weeks ago.
Trumbull is 59th this week with 541 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was 61st last week with 621.8 cases per 100,000 and 65th two weeks ago with 611.7 cases per 100,000.
It was at 76th three weeks ago with 561.2 cases per 100,000, 80th four weeks ago with 484.9 cases per 100,000 and 85th five weeks ago with 322.8 cases per 100,000 residents.
Columbiana moved up this week to ninth with 839.2 cases per 100,000 residents.
It was 24th last week with 818.6 cases per 100,000 residents and 28th two weeks ago with 860.8 cases per 100,000 residents.
Columbiana was 34th three weeks ago with 922.6 cases per 100,000 residents, 52nd four weeks ago with 776.4 cases per 100,000 residents and 58th five weeks ago with 552.6 cases per 100,000.
COVID-19 DATA
The 4,937 COVID-19 cases Friday is down from the daily average of 5,242 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.
Friday's total includes 344 cases in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties combined.
The state had a total of 1,490,451 COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 1,366,414 presumed recovered and 23,327 deaths.
The ODH usually provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays.
There were 306 COVID-19 deaths since Tuesday including 11 in Trumbull, six in Columbiana and five in Mahoning counties.
Mahoning County had 30,057 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 26,964 presumed recovered and 672 deaths.
Trumbull County had 22,357 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 19,909 presumed recovered and 552 deaths.
Columbiana County had 13,587 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 11,947 presumed recovered and 263 deaths.
