Board approves stadium, school plan

Projects to cost Mathews district more than $2.6M

VIENNA — The Mathews Board of Education approved a resolution to proceed with a plan for work at Baker Elementary School and the school’s football stadium.

The motion passed Tuesday that included the initial construction costs for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, a new roof and other work at Baker will cost $1.8 million and $821,744 work at the football stadium.

Board member Beth Haddle said she and board member James Pegg attended a recent facility development meeting on the two projects with school administrators and architects, Architectural Vision Group of Westlake.

“Baker is the crown jewel of our schools. The stadium is also located there,” Haddle said.

Treasurer Bradley Panak said the district has budgeted $300,000 for the HVAC and roof in addition to $275,000 from the Cafaro Foundation. Panak said $1 million can be taken out of the $1.6 million in permanent improvement funds.

The roof work is at $558,800 and the HVAC is projected at $522,875.

Haddle said the proposal is to expand Baker by four classrooms, restrooms and two offices for special services, with the goal of moving 100 students at Currie Elementary to Baker in two years.

Superintendent Russell McQuaide said there will be an auxiliary gym.

Board member Ken Wallace said there also will be space provided at Baker for services such as occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Haddle said the Currie site will be sold, as well as the board office building and property.

Panak said passage of a renewal school operating levy on the November ballot will help cover the costs. He said the levy generates $680,000 per year.

McQuaide said the projects will take two to three years to complete.

“It’s time for new facilities. The improvements at the stadium will be able to be seen when people drive by. People will be able to come there and see the vast differences,” he said.

Proposed stadium improvements include replacing the bleachers, scoreboard and press box. The home stand bleachers will be replaced by a 500-seat bleacher at $190,000, with the visitors side bleachers replaced at $20,000. Upgrades to the press box and stadium lights will cost $250,000, and the scoreboard and sound system will cost $80,000. McQuaide said there also can be portable stands for special events and games at different fields.

Starting at $3.23/week.
