One more COVID-19 death was reported this week each nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, but the biggest new spike in cases was in Columbiana County.
Columbiana County long-term care facilities, which rose from no cases to four last week, rose again this week to 19 cases, fueled by Assisted Living Ministry assisted living on St. Clair Avenue in East Liverpool. That facility has 14 new patient cases this week and one staff case. It had only had one previous case since the pandemic began. It was a staff case.
Two other Columbiana County facilities -- Circle of Care nursing home in Salem and Salem North Health Care Center nursing home -- still have the same two cases each this week that they had last week, according to the Ohio Department of Health website.
In Mahoning County, the number of COVID-19 cases among nursing homes rose from 51 to 56 this week. One reason is that Briarfield at Ashley Circle nursing home in Austintown rose from one staff case to five this week. It continues to have five patient cases.
Also, the Hampton Woods Nursing Center Inc. nursing home in Poland has eight cases this week, up from one patient case and one staff case last week. The Marion Living Center assisted living facility in North Lima has three patient cases and one staff case this week after having just one staff case last week.
Trumbull County facilities totaled just two cases this week -- one each at Clearview Lantern Suites assisted living in Champion and one at the Shepherd of the Valley nursing home in Liberty.
As a state, the number of patient cases dropped this week from 635 to 574, and the number of staff cases dropped from 814 to 740.
There were no additional deaths at Columbiana County nursing homes and assisted living facilities this week and remains at 79. Mahoning County now has 288 nursing home COVID-19 deaths, and Trumbull has 162. The state does not identify which facilities had deaths.
Among area prisons the number of cases rose at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown. It had two staff cases and three inmate cases last week but has nine staff cases and two inmate cases this week. The Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown saw one additional case among staff and now has seven staff cases and no inmate cases. The Trumbull Correctional Institution, which had seven staff cases and eight inmate cases last week, now has three staff cases and three inmate cases.
Statewide, the prison system has 101 staff cases of the virus and 64 inmate cases, down from 138 staff cases and 67 inmate cases last week.
