Following the Labor Day weekend, 6,823 new COVID-19 cases were reported statewide by the Ohio Department of Health.
The total number of cases is now 1,268,841. Since last week, the state has posted an additional 40,839 cases. The death total remains 21,020.
The ODH usually provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Locally, Mahoning County surged, increasing the total number of cases by 126 Wednesday, making the new total 25,071. Since last week, the county added 669 new cases and three deaths.
In Trumbull County, the new case total is 18,502. The county added 67 new cases Wednesday. Since last week, four deaths were attributed to COVID-19, and the county added a total of 459 cases.
In Columbiana County, 66 new cases were reported by the ODH, bringing the total cases up to 10,565. Since last week, no new deaths were added, but 418 new cases were tallied.
While the new cases soared to nearly 7,000 statewide, the vaccination effort also climbed with 8,579 Ohioans getting the vaccine. The total number of those who at least had started the vaccination process is 6,139,441, or 52.52 percent of the population.
Locally, more than 50 percent of Mahoning County residents -- 116,092 -- have gotten the vaccine. The ODH reported 111 residents started the process as of 6 a.m. Wednesday.
In Trumbull County, 96,051 people at least have started the vaccination effort, with 84 of them being new on Wednesday. The percentage of Trumbull County residents inoculated is 48.52.
In Columbiana County, 44 vaccinations were started, bringing the total to 41,960, or 41.18 percent.
