Cases of COVID-19 continue to march higher at area nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, and deaths rose by three in Mahoning and Trumbull counties in the past two weeks.
The more dramatic rise has been in statewide prison cases. They have nearly tripled in the past two weeks -- from 60 to 168.
The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown saw an increase in staff cases from three to eight in just the past two days. There are no current inmate cases in any of the three local prisons.
The Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown has two staff cases this week, and the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg has one staff case.
But the number of prison cases across the state this week rose to 168 -- 108 staff cases and 60 inmate cases. The number of cases was 98 a week ago. It was 60 two weeks ago.
Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted living facilities saw a slight increase in COVID-19 cases this week compared to last week, rising from 33 to 36 with Humility House nursing home in Austintown having six staff cases and no patient cases.
Masternick Memorial Healthcare Center in New Middletown has four staff cases and one patient case this week, while the Marian Living Center assisted living in North Lima has four patient cases this week. The Inn at Poland Way assisted living in Poland has three staff cases and one patient case.
Fourteen other Mahoning County facilities had either one or two cases, nearly all of them staff cases. In fact, only seven of 36 cases involve patients, according to Ohio Department of Health data.
Trumbull County facilities have eight COVID-19 cases this week, six of them among staff and two among patients. The Cortland Center nursing home in Cortland had the most -- three staff cases. Four other facilities had one or two cases. No Columbiana County facilities reported any cases this week.
The number of COVID-19-related deaths at Mahoning and Trumbull County facilities rose last week for the first time since July 14. Trumbull County's deaths rose from 157 to 159 last week.
Mahoning County facilities saw an increase in deaths from 282 to 283 last week. There were no additional deaths reported this week in Trumbull, Mahoning or Columbiana counties.
The number of COVID-19 cases at nursing homes across the state also rose this week. The number was 1,015 this week, compared to 892 last week and 698 the week before that.
