Trumbull sees sharp rise in daily, weekly cases
State jumps 39 percent in average COVID-19 infections last week

Trumbull County showed the biggest increase in new COVID-19 cases Saturday within the three-county region.
Trumbull added 68 cases to its tally, bringing the total to 17,847 since the pandemic started. That was double the number of new cases the county reported on Friday, and nearly double the 36 cases a week ago.
For the week ending Aug. 21, Trumbull averaged 35 cases per day. For the week that ended Saturday, Trumbull averaged just over 45 cases per day.
Trumbull mirrored the statewide numbers, which showed Ohio reporting 5,204 new cases of the coronavirus, about 350 more than Friday and more than 60 percent higher than the state's 21-day average.
The state was averaging about 3,000 daily cases for the week ending Aug. 21. It averaged almost 4,163 daily cases for the last week, an increase of nearly 39 percent.
By comparison, the numbers for Mahoning and Columbiana at least maintained the status quo.
Mahoning, which is more populous, reported the same number of new cases as Trumbull at 68. That actually was 11 fewer cases than Friday.
The weekly numbers are less promising. Mahoning was averaging close to 54 cases per day for the week ending Aug. 21. It averaged 68 cases per day last week.
Columbiana's daily total stayed consistent with 43 new cases reported on both Friday and Saturday. Bucking trends statewide and in most of the country, its weekly average decreased slightly as well. The average was just fewer than 40 per day for the week ending Aug. 21, and it reported just fewer than 38 cases daily during the last week.
Total hospitalizations in the region are 1,322 in Trumbull, 1,146 in Mahoning and 542 in Columbiana.
The number of people presumed recovered are 16,595 in Trumbull, 22,393 in Mahoning and 9,128 in Columbiana.
