The Ohio Department of Health on Sunday reported 1,977 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 1,159,759 cases.
It was the 13th straight day new cases exceeded 1,000. Seven out of the past 13 days saw case numbers eclipse 2,000, with Sunday coming just shy of being No. 8.
Case numbers again are higher than the 21-day average of 1,793, officials said.
The state also reported 40 hospitalizations, bringing that total to 63,233. Deaths statewide sit at 20,614 deaths.
State officials reported vaccination rates in Ohio are up to 50.64 percent for people of all ages.
Mahoning County added 32 cases Sunday for a total of 23,296. There have been 1,107 hospitalizations and 615 deaths.
Forty-two new cases were reported in Trumbull County on Sunday, moving the total to 17,326 with 1,282 hospitalizations and 493 deaths.
Columbiana County has 27 new cases for a total of 9,511, along with 522 hospitalizations and 236 deaths.
Mahoning County's vaccination rate is 49.04 percent, followed by Trumbull at 46.88 percent and Columbiana at 39.59 percent.
State officials said three promising treatments for COVID-19 are under trial at The Ohio State University.
On Thursday, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, the new ODH director, said 99 percent of those dying from the virus are unvaccinated. He said genomic sequencing has allowed scientists to confirm the deaths and hospitalizations are due to the delta variant, which is making people "sicker, quicker," especially the young, obese and unvaccinated.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists 66 counties, including Columbiana, as high COVID-19 transmission areas and another 20, including Mahoning and Trumbull, as substantial transmission counties. Only two counties in the state are listed by the CDC as moderate risk areas.
