Body found on steps of city apartment

Warren police called to scene after reports of shots fired in area

WARREN — The body of a 52-year-old man was found shortly after midnight Wednesday on the front steps of his home at 407 Southern Blvd. NW.

Police went to the address after receiving reports of shots fired. They found Dwaine L. Thomas unresponsive at the foot of the steps, according to a police report.

Officers entered and secured the apartment building. Crime scene tape was placed around it, and police detectives were called.

The Trumbull County Coroner’s Office is scheduled to do an autopsy on Thomas’ body today.

Councilman Ron White, D-7th Ward, said the owner of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred, St. Andrews Manor, over the last year has made between $500,000 and $750,000 worth of improvements, including adding cameras and lighting throughout the area to make residents feel more secure.

“I have spoken to the ownership and the management about things they can do to improve the area,” White said. “The ownership have put in more than 50 cameras around and have been willing to assist police in investigations.”

“They want to be police friendly,” he said. “They want the residents to feel safe.”

Police are continuing their investigation.

This was the third homicide in the city this year. The last one was Feb. 28 when an elderly woman was struck by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting.

Last year, the city recorded 16 homicides.
