While Ohio saw an increase in COVID-19 cases this week, Mahoning and Trumbull had declines and dropped all the way down to 54th and 61st, respectively, among the state's 88 counties on the list of highest cases per 100,000 residents.
Largely because of the spread of the delta variant, Ohio saw its COVID-19 cases per 100,000 go from 19.2 last week to 27 this week.
Mahoning and Trumbull had slightly lower COVID-19 cases per 100,000 two weeks ago than this week, but declined from last week while the state had an overall increase.
Mahoning spent six weeks in the top six counties for COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents before dropping three weeks ago to 18th. It declined two weeks ago to 34th, but with an increase in cases last week, it was 29th among the state's 88 counties.
A decrease in cases this week to 21.4 per 100,000 residents from 23.2 last week, while other counties saw increases or smaller declines, resulted in Mahoning going down to 54th in the state.
The county had 21 cases per 100,000 two weeks ago, 26.7 cases three weeks ago and 39.4 cases four weeks ago. At the time, the 39.4 cases was the sixth-highest among counties in the state.
Trumbull spent four weeks in the top 15, before going to 33rd four weeks ago with 27.8 cases per 100,000.
It dropped to 39th three weeks ago with 20.2 cases, then further to 53rd two weeks ago with 18.2 cases, but with an increase in cases to 21.7 per 100,000 last week it was at 33rd.
Trumbull's cases per 100,000 this week declined to 19.7, resulting in the county being 61st on the list of the state's 88 counties.
Columbiana saw a large increase in COVID-19 cases this week to 17.7 per 100,000 people compared to 11.8 cases last week.
Even with the increase, the county's case number per 100,000 is small compared to the rest of the state. The increase resulted in Columbiana moving from 73rd last week to 70th this week.
It was at 47th two weeks ago, also with 17.7 cases, 33rd three weeks ago with 21.6 cases and 48th four weeks ago with 24.5 cases.
The state saw an increase this week to 27 cases per 100,000 residents from 19.2 last week. It was at 19.6 cases two weeks ago, 26.8 three weeks ago and 39.1 cases four weeks ago.
The Ohio Department of Health measures cases per 100,000 residents to provide a fair comparison among counties because total case numbers would result in more-populous counties ranking higher.
The No. 1 county in the state in COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents was Lawrence with 134.5, followed by Paulding with 91 and Williams with 79. Overall, eight of the state's 88 counties have rates higher than 50 cases per 100,000 residents. They're all among the least-populous counties in the state.
COVID-19 DATA
The 533 new COVID-19 case number reported Friday is up from the daily average of 287 for the past 21 days, with the delta variant largely to blame for the recent increase in cases.
With 547 cases reported Thursday, this is the first time Ohio has had two consecutive days with more than 500 reported COVID-19 cases since May 28 and 29.
The state had a total of 1,116,322 COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 1,088,034 presumed recovered and 20,437 deaths.
The ODH usually provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Twenty-six COVID-19 deaths were added since Tuesday.
Mahoning County had 22,484 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 21,742 presumed recovered and 612 deaths, according to the ODH.
Trumbull County had 16,640 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 16,033 presumed recovered and 487 deaths.
Columbiana County had 9,078 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 8,811 presumed recovered and 236 deaths.
VACCINATIONS
There were 5,652,606 people, 48.36 percent of the state's population, who at least had started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Friday, including 6,099 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.
In Mahoning County, 46.97 percent of the population (107,404 people) had received at least one dose, while 44.65 percent of the population in Trumbull County (88,396 people) and 37.78 percent in Columbiana County (38,491 people) had as of 6 a.m. Friday, according to the ODH.
There were 5,296,611 people, 45.31 percent of the state's population, who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Friday, including 6,220 in the prior 24 hours.
In Mahoning County, 43.59 percent of the population (99,683 people) had completed the process while 41.06 percent of the population in Trumbull (81,285 people) and 35.67 percent of the population in Columbiana (36,337 people) had as of 6 a.m. Friday.
