Police probe shooting death in Niles

39-year-old man found with multiple gunshot wounds

NILES — City police are investigating the Sunday night shooting death of a city man in a West First Street home.

Niles police identified the victim as Thomas Carr, 39.

Police received a call around midnight about a disturbance at 109 W. First St. While en route, Niles dispatch received more calls saying that shots were fired.

Officers arrived to find Carr dead on the property with multiple gunshot wounds.

Another man, Dylan Hilty, 19, also was shot but was able to make it back to his residence, also on First Street. Hilty was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for surgery; his condition was not available.

A third man involved in the disturbance was “apprehended by responding officers unharmed,” a police news release states.

There was some kind of confrontation between Carr, Hilty and the third man and the residents of 109 W. First St. The three men came to the house uninvited and caused the initial disturbance, the release states.

“A male juvenile resident from 109 W. First fired on the group of subjects that came to the home,” Chief Jay Holland stated in the release.

The shooting is under investigation by Niles police in partnership with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office.

A neighbor said he and his wife were asleep during the incident, but noted his wife heard one of the shots. He, was awakened by the sirens. When he went to see what was going on, he saw police taping off the scene.

The same neighbor said the residents of the 109 address seem to be “really nice people.” He also said the neighborhood has “always been good.”

Niles police on Monday had a cruiser stationed at the end of the street, under the South Main Street Bridge. When asked, officers said they were there “to make sure everyone in the neighborhood has a good day.”
