Couple arrested after gun pulled
WARREN — A 34-year-old Kings Drive SW resident pleaded not guilty to charges of carrying concealed weapons, having weapons under disability and aggravated menacing during an arraignment Wednesday before Warren Municipal Couty Judge Terry Ivanchak.
George Vanderwall Jr. was assigned a $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court on March 11, court records show. A clerk at the Family Dollar, 1139 W. Market St., reported to police that a man pulled a gun on another customer at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, before the two left the store.
The man with the gun had tattoos on his face, and was wearing jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt. He headed west when he left the building. The victim, Shania N. Mechling, 22, of Leavittsburg, walked west on the south sidewalk of Ward Street, according to a police report.
The two were spotted a short time later by officers near the corner of Haymaker and Ward Street and were stopped by officers without incident, the police report states.
Upon searching Vanderwall, officers found a loaded .32-caliber handgun in his hoodie pocket. It had six rounds in it. Officers also found two plastic bags containing 25 rounds of .22-caliber ammunition and 11 rounds of .32-caliber ammunition on Vanderwall, the report states.
A loaded Model 75 Beretta was found in Mechling’s hoodie pocket. It also had six rounds in it.
Vanderwall told officers both guns belonged to him.
Both were taken to Trumbull County jail. Vanderwall was booked on charges of aggravated menacing, carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability.
Mechling was booked on a carrying a concealed weapon charge. She received a $1,500 bond.
