LORDSTOWN -- Police Chief Brent Milhoan said he has received calls and complaints from residents about trains blocking traffic on Salt Springs and Muth roads.
Milhoan told village council at its meeting earlier this week that he received calls from truck drivers who have had to wait almost an hour at the location due to trains at the railroad crossing and suggested trucks be rerouted on Lyntz Road to Tod Avenue.
Milhoan said it was not advised to have trucks on Lyntz Road since it is not a truck route and has residential areas.
Mayor Arno Hill said council's road committee will review the matter.
In previous years when the situation created a problem, village officials met with CSX railroad officials to talk about stopped trains blocking traffic in the community.
There was a concern school buses and safety vehicles as well as residents and truck drivers were being delayed at the intersection.
Several residents of Salt Springs Road and truck drivers have said the train that travels on the tracks at Salt Springs comes to a complete stop for a substantial amount of time.
In another matter, village Engineer Chris Kogelnik said he is looking at available funding through Transportation Improvement Plan funds or Ohio Public Works Commission for paving Hallock Young Road between state Route 45 and Bailey Road in front of the former General Motors plant.
Kogelnik said if funding is secured for the $500,000 project, it could be completed in late spring or early summer 2022 and, if enough funding is acquired, the village may pay 20 percent or less.
"This is a timely project to get done." Hill said.
Milhoan also discussed the need for replacing police cruisers, noting the department is down to five cruisers with some driven by police auxiliary members. He said they are not in the best of shape.
He asked council to consider getting a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe or a 2021 Ford Explorer.
Orders will need to be in by end of March. Hill said council will review the request.
