WARREN -- Three high school seniors -- two from Warren G. Harding and one from Girard -- each were awarded $500 scholarships Friday during a ceremony sponsored by the Trumbull County African-American Achievers Association.
The awardees are Trinity George, 18, Girard High School; Kai Neal, 17, Warren G. Harding; and Brenden Freeman, 18, Warren G. Harding. The scholarship funds were donated by Trumbull County Dress for Success, Sterling McCullough Williams Funeral Home and Grace AME Nursing Guild.
The scholarships normally are presented to students during the African-American Achievers Association dinner during February, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sponsors elected not to have the dinner this year.
Freeman said receiving the scholarship has proven that the hard work he has done while at Harding has paid off.
"I plan on attending Capital University in Bexley, Ohio, and majoring in music production and minoring in business management," Freeman said.
George said she was thrilled to be given the scholarship.
"I have not received many awards in my life," she said. "Going to a predominately white school, I did not receive a lot of recognition or awards. Receiving this from an African-American organization means a whole lot to me."
George describes herself as a hard worker.
"I don't take many breaks in my academic career," she said. "I plan to go to Cleveland State University and study occupational therapy."
Neal also expressed pride in being giving the scholarship.
"This is the only award I've received," she said. "I want to go college for psychology. I want to help people."
Due to the pandemic, sponsors of the Trumbull County African-American Achievers Association say they have not been able to do some of the activities they normally would have done last year and, so far, during 2021.
