By Staff report 2 min read

WARREN -- The Warren Police Department in the last week received three reports of identity fraud where women said someone had filed for unemployment benefits in their name.

A 79-year-old woman who gave a Wainwood Drive SE address, came on station the morning of Jan. 22 to say she received in the mail an ATM / debit card from US Bank. After calling the bank, the woman told police she learned the card was to be used for the government's stimulus and unemployment checks. However, the bank rep told her she could not get any more assistance unless she activates the card. The woman was advised to file a complaint through the ohio.gov website, the report states.

After complaining to police, the woman later called back saying she discovered a person unknown to her had filed for unemployment benefits in her name.

An Oak Circle SW woman told police that on Jan. 25, she received letter in the mail from U.S. Bank that had a prepaid debit card in it. She called the bank and was told that an account was opened up in her name and the account received a deposit from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The woman told police she didn't sign up for any benefits. The bank told the woman they canceled the account.

The woman told police she was going to complain to the Federal Trade Commission and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

In a third report, an Estabrook Avenue NW woman told police that on Wednesday she discovered an unknown person had tried to get unemployment benefits using her personal information.
