WHAT: Board of education organizational Jan. 4 /regular meeting Monday
PRESENT: Julie Altawil, Brian Burkey, Ken Jones, Susan Brucoli and Denise Delida
The board:
• Named Altawil president and Burkey vice president;
• Was informed the second semester began Monday with students attending four days a week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with remote learning on Wednesdays. Officials noted 50 students, previously on all remote learning, are returning to in-person learning;
• Approved the 2021-22 calendar with first day for students Sept. 7 and last day June 2, 2022;
• Approved former board member Scott Lehman to serve as the board's representative to the Trumbull Career / Technical Center board for a three-year term;
• Approved an agreement with Kent State University for College Credit-Plus courses for high school students for 2021-22;
• Heard from food service supervisor Justin Pancake that a $2,300 donation from the community for the Paw Pantry allowed for food baskets for 35 families and gift baskets for five families at the holidays. He said cafeteria staff also put together meals for 650 students per week for total delivery of 67,000 meals for the school year;
• Received a donation from Pet Supplies Plus in Niles of five 10-gallon fish tanks for student projects at the high school;
• Named Burkey as the board's legislative liaison;
• Set meetings for 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month at various school locations.
