BROOKFIELD -- Trustee Dan Suttles said when he learned a snow plow truck mirror was broken off after it hit a basketball hoop by the road, he thought it must be an isolated incident -- until he learned 19 locations in the township had hoops at the side of or on the road.
Suttles told trustees at their year-end meeting Monday that the snow plow drivers are having issues getting around the basketball hoops when they plow.
"The mirror on one truck was damaged because the mirror lines up right where the hoop is. Residents need to remove them from the road or at least turn them around so the hoops are not at the street side," Suttles said. "I really thought there was one or two places where this was a problem until they told me there were 19. I didn't realize there were that many in the township."
He said residents, as a courtesy to the road crews, need to move them or risk them being damaged, or township equipment being damaged.
"This will help our drivers to clear the road better. It's one thing when it is daylight but at night when they are clearing the roads you can't always see the hoops. The last thing you are thinking about when it is snowing and you are clearing the roads is a basketball hoop," he said.
Suttles said he is aware that people play basketball year round but all that is needed is to remove them from the road.
Trustee Ron Haun suggested that residents be reminded, when there is a parking ban and vehicles have to be off the roads, also to remove the basketball hoops.
"Hopefully this will also help," Haun said.
Road supervisor Jamie Fredenburg gave the list of the 19 locations to the police department in case there is an issue and the hoops aren't moved.
In other business, Trustee Gary Lees said a beautification commission has selected the properties for the year for upkeep, betterment and beautification.
Chosen were: Richard Simmons, 7640 Warren-Sharon Road for residential front yard commercial design; Dvan Dixon, 800 state Route 7 for outstanding commercial landscape design; and Carol Durso, 1000 state Route 7 NE for outstanding residential landscape for overall building and property.
Lees said the awards will be presented next spring.
