WARREN -- In a race with no incumbents, the vote was divided almost 50-50 for Trumbull County coroner, with Lawrence M. D'Amico scraping ahead by about 1,600 votes.
D'Amico, 58, of Warren, a Democrat, took 46,997 of the 92,320 votes for coroner, according to the unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections on Tuesday night.
Republican Larry Woods, 71, of Warren earned a reported 45,323 votes, or just over 49 percent to D'Amico's nearly 51 percent.
D'Amico is the deputy coroner and a surgeon with D'Amico Patchen Surgery, Inc., with affiliations with Trumbull Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph Warren Hospital. He previously pointed to his role as deputy and 26 years as a general and trauma surgeon as qualifications that made him worthy of the coroner's position.
Woods is a self-practicing cardiologist and intensive care specialist who has worked for Mercy Health and Trumbull Regional Medical Center. He also served in the U.S. Army, was a colonel in the Air Force Reserve, was on the NASA Space Shuttle Rescue Team, deployed with the military and was a public health officer at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.
Both men told the Tribune Chronicle they want to create and promote education programs to address suicide and substance abuse disorders.
Current county coroner, Dr. Thomas James, who was appointed to the position in 2018 following the death of sitting coroner Dr. Humphrey Gremaniuk, did not seek re-election.
