Reserve graduate in Navy leadership program

By Staff report 2 min read

Warren native Sherri L. Johnston, a program manager in the business directorate at Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command headquarters in Washington, D.C., was selected earlier this month to participate in NAVFAC's Leadership Development Program.

This two-year program offers rotational assignments, training and developmental activities to boost selectees' corporate experience and prepare them for potential senior leadership positions.

Johnston, who is pursuing a doctorate in business administration, has been a Navy civilian employee for 11 years and works with the Navy's facilities engineering and expeditionary systems experts.

"I am assigned to the Command Analytics Office and serve on the Strategy Team, acting as the Enterprise Data Warehouse Lead," Johnston said. "The broad reach of NAVFAC HQ provides me the opportunity to have a significant impact on the creation and implementation of the data strategies that help the SYSCOM make impactful business decisions and meet its mission to support the warfighter and protect the nation."

NAVFAC Washington workforce consists of more than 1,600 civilian and military personnel who provide a full range of facilities engineering products and services, with expertise in acquisition, public works, capital improvements, environmental, real estate, planning and asset management.

According to Johnston, a 1985 Warren Western Reserve High School graduate, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Warren.

"I had teachers and other adults that encouraged me, even though it took years into my adulthood to realize my goals," Johnston said. "Coming from a town that raised an astronaut, pro football players, directors, actresses, and musicians, I hope to make my hometown proud with my accomplishments serving the country as a civilian with the Navy."

Johnston also has received Meritorious Civil Service Award.

"I am proud of the teams I have been a part of and the teams I have created that have seamlessly worked together to improve the security and well-being of our military," Johnston said. "Working as a supply chain manager, I received a Meritorious Civil Service Award for standing up and successfully operating 10 warehouses throughout Europe and Southwest Asia. These warehouses supply the regions with the necessary materials to support the mission of the Navy Public Works Departments public throughout the theater."
