GIRARD -- Two people were killed just after noon on Tuesday in a crash involving a motorcycle and semi-tractor trailer on Interstate 80 in Girard, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Two people were riding west in the middle lane on Interstate 80 on a 1992 Honda Goldwing Tricycle that swerved to avoid debris in the road, according to a patrol report. The bike overturned into the left lane and both occupants were ejected.
A 2010 Freightliner semi-tractor with double trailers was headed west in the left lane and struck the bike and two occupants, the patrol report states.
The passenger of the Tricycle was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, the report states.
The semi driver was not injured. Interstate 80 west was closed for several hours while the crash was investigated, but reopened around 5 p.m. Traffic was backed up to the Belmont Avenue exit in Liberty.
The crash is still under investigation and the names of the victims are not being released until family has been notified, according to the patrol.
