WEST FARMINGTON -- Trumbull County sheriff deputies were called to investigate a skydiving accident where a man's parachute struck some power lines before he landed in a field east of Girdle Road.
According to the sheriff's report, Maxim Sukharev-Chuyan, 24, of Temple, N.H., received minor injuries from the fall and was treated at the scene by the Farmington Township Fire Department.
The incident happened about 8:15 a.m. Sunday in the 7100 block of Girdle Road.
Chuyan told deputies his parachute clipped the Ohio Edison electric lines, but he was not shocked, according to reports.
Chuyan told deputies he jumped out of a chartered hot air balloon that took off from somewhere in Portage County.
A spokeswoman for the Cleveland Skydiving Center in Garrettsville said she knew about the incident and Sukharev-Chuyan was all right, but that particular jump was not affiliated with her company. She said Sukharev-Chuyan had chartered the hot air balloon from a South Carolina company and those balloons take off from all parts of Ohio.
The report states the skydiver told deputies he was insured under the U.S. Parachute Association, but he could not provide documentation to authorities.
Deputies contacted the Federal Aviation Administration to notify the agency about the accident. An FAA investigator was to review the accident further to determine if any violations occurred. A call placed to the FAA Great Lakes office was not returned.
Ohio Edison also was dispatched to the scene because the accident brought the power lines down onto the road. Deputies had taken photos of the damage, the report states. Lauren Siburkis of FirstEnergy's media relations office said line crews responded about 9:30 a.m. to the outage, which impacted about 20 customers in the area of Girdle and Clark roads.
Crews had to replace several spans of the downed power lines, but all customers were restored to full power by 2 p.m. Sunday, Siburkis said.
