Virus scare at post office
Postal service can’t say who has COVID-19 in Girard
GIRARD — An employee at the Girard post office on Market Street has tested positive for COVID-19.
The post office will remain open, and the workers are taking extra precautions to ensure their safety — as well as the safety of others who come through the facility.
The workers at the Girard post office were notified Monday morning, and some said they are scared.
It’s a small facility, with a divider between the public and the postal staff. There are the usual signs urging people to wash their hands and to stay 6 feet apart and arrows on the floor for people to follow.
The postal service said there’s no evidence the virus can spread through the mail.
“The U.S. Postal Service has learned that one of our Girard post office employees recently tested positive for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19),” the postal service said in a statement provided by Naddia Dhalai, strategic communication specialist for the Northern Ohio District and Ohio Valley District.
“The safety and well-being of our employees is one of our highest priorities. To ensure the health of our employees, we are continuing to follow recommended strategies from the CDC and local health departments. We also continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation on a nationwide basis,” the statement continued.
“As you may know, under the Rehabilitation Act and the Privacy Act, specific employee medical information must be kept confidential and may only be shared in very limited circumstances. Therefore, the Postal Service cannot share the name of the employee who tested positive for COVID-19 or further specifics of his or her medical condition.”
The Girard workers who said Monday that they are scared noted they were instructed to not release what the notice said.
“Both the CDC and the World Health Organization have indicated that there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 can spread through the mail. In addition, both the Surgeon General and the Director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases have indicated that there is currently no evidence that the coronavirus is being spread through the mail,” the USPS statement concluded.
