HOWLAND -- A Vermont deputy and her police dog were injured Monday night when an impaired driver collided with her Orange County Sheriff's patrol car, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Gregory Miller, 59, of Niles, failed to stop at a red light while traveling southbound on state Route 46 and hit the driver's side of deputy Carry Pine's patrol car as she traveled eastbound on Mines Road, the patrol report states.
Pine, 39, of Vermont, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Her police dog, Diesel, was in the back seat of the patrol car and was seriously injured.
The dog was taken to MedVet animal care clinic in Girard.
Diesel has since been released from the vet clinic and is doing well, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. As of Tuesday afternoon, Pine was reportedly in high spirits and was expected to be released from the hospital soon.
Pine and Diesel were in the Mahoning Valley for police dog training, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Miller was not injured and refused medical treatment.
According to the state patrol, alcohol and drugs were a factor in the crash. Miller is charged with failure to stop at a red light and operating a vehicle under the influence.
