Heavy rainfall floods area
High winds also cause power outages throughout county

WARREN — Warren resident Lynn Griffith said he was running Sunday at Perkins Park — which he does often — when he realized he needed to change his usual route, as much of the park was flooded when the Mahoning River crested its banks.
Several areas near rivers throughout Trumbull County were covered with water following heavy rainfall Saturday night and early Sunday.
A Trumbull County 911 spokesman said dispatch received calls throughout Sunday, reporting wires and trees down on roadways and areas of heavy flooding. A fallen tree blocked traffic Sunday afternoon near the intersection of state Route 46 and North Road, according to the 911 report.
Bazetta fire Chief Dennis Lewis said water from Mosquito Lake was up to the park’s driving areas.
The Mahoning River in Leavittsburg reached a level of 14.02 feet and Youngstown had reached 12.32 feet Sunday.
Zachary Svette, executive director of the Trumbull County MetroParks, said until further notice, Thomas Swift MetroPark in Braceville and Canoe City MetroPark in Leavittsburg will be closed. The river had begun to flood on the driveway area of Canoe City Sunday afternoon.
Svette said other county parks are open, but people are asked to be cautious because of standing water in places. Parks will reopen once water recedes and they are cleaned up, Svette said.
Warmer temperatures in the lower 70s Sunday brought strong winds.
On Sunday afternoon, power outages were reported by First Energy to near 1,600 residences in Trumbull and Mahoning counties, with the Liberty and Girard areas having more than 770 without power. About 700 homes were without power in the Youngstown area. Columbiana County reported more than 1,400 outages late Sunday. According to the First Energy website, only about 2,200 Ohio customers were left without power late Sunday, including two small outages in Bazetta in Trumbull County and six others in Mahoning County.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a flood warning for the Mahoning River at Leavittsburg, the Mahoning River at Warren and Eagle Creek at Phalanx Station. The warning for Eagle Creek at Phalanx was in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday when the creek was more than 2 feet above flood stage. The waterway was expected to crest at near 12.1 feet overnight before falling below flood stage this morning.
In addition to rain, high winds on Sunday afternoon brought down trees and wires and caused power outages in different areas of the county, including a section of downtown Warren. Power was restored there by 5 p.m.
Signs at the intersection of West Market Street and Mahoning Avenue NW directing for motorists to stop because the traffic light was out had been blown over. City road crews helped direct traffic.
Flash flooding also was reported Sunday throughout northeastern Ohio with many road closures. Residents in the Cleveland area and Cuyahoga County saw flooded roads, intersections and high waters in their neighborhoods. The weekend’s heavy rain caused flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as other drainage and low-lying areas.
