CHAMPION -- Township trustees have been in contact with the Ohio Department of Transportation on moving forward with constructing a sound wall off state Route 5 near a residential neighborhood near the busy highway.
Trustee Chairman Doug Emerine said at this week's trustees meeting that he spoke to ODOT officials in Akron about the status of the sound barrier to help alleviate highway noise for residents of Stewart Street, Relim Drive, Brookside Drive and Mahoning Place.
He said ODOT will canvass the neighborhoods in the upcoming weeks to inform residents of what is planned. Several residents have attended trustee meetings voicing their concerns over the loud traffic noise from vehicles on the highways.
Officials said representatives of ODOT have set up sound monitoring equipment to record sound decibel levels coming from traffic on the state Route 5 bypass.
In other business, trustees:
l Spoke with officials at Ohio Star Forge about getting new signage placed along Mahoning Avenue to help direct truck traffic to the company.
Emerine said previously drivers were mistakenly entering a nearby credit union parking lot because a sign for Ohio Star Forge is located nearby;
l Approved township mechanic Joe Meikle to check on used Ohio State Highway Patrol vehicles in Columbus for possible use for the township's part-time police officers;
l Approved repairs at the administration building, including installation of LED lights at $8,300 and overhead doors at the road department at $5,850;
l Have scheduled special meetings for closed executive sessions on contracts for the police, fire and road departments. Emerine said the contracts with the three departments will expire in May.
