BRISTOL -- A two-vehicle crash that occurred at 6:30 a.m. Friday on state Route 45, sent three people to area hospitals.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol originally had been looking for a third vehicle that left the scene, but later said an investigation determined a third vehicle was not involved.
Michael Smeltzer, 30, of Warren, was driving north in a 2002 black Toyota Camry when he lost control of his vehicle, went left of center and spun into the opposite lane, according to a patrol report.
The vehicle was struck by a 2005 Nissan Murano driven by Janet Kniseley, 55, of North Bloomfield, who was driving south on state Route 45.
Both the Camry and the Murano went off the west side of the road, the patrol report states.
Smeltzer was transported to Trumbull Regional Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries, according to the report. The front seat passenger in Smeltzer's vehicle, Amy Smeltzer, 29, of Warren, was transported to Trumbull Regional with critical injuries and later was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Kniseley was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries, the report states.
Troopers described the road as being snow and slush covered at the time of the crash. It was closed for several hours while an investigation took place.
Neither Michael Smeltzer nor Amy Smeltzer were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, the patrol report states.
Bristol Township Fire /EMS Department, Champion Township EMS, Bazetta Township EMS, Trumbull County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the crash scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Warren Post.
