Thieves steal catalytic converters

1 min read

WARREN -- A manager of Mazcool 1 Auto Outlet LLC reported that catalytic converters were stolen off 18 vehicles parked in its lot at 817 Elm Road NE sometime between 3 p.m. Saturday and noon Wednesday.

The thefts were reported to police on Wednesday.

The converters were taken from a variety of vehicles, including Lincoln Navigators, Chevy Trailblazers, Ford Explorers and Ford Expeditions, according to a police report. The vehicles ranged from model years 2003 to 2009.

The National Insurance Crimes Bureau in a 2016 report noted converters, at that time, could be sold to scrap dealers at prices ranging from $20 to $240. Replacement costs of converters can range from $500 to $2,300, depending on the type, according to the NICB report.

Ohio had the fourth-highest number of catalytic converter thefts in the nation in 2016.

Jim Keen, manager of the used car lot, said the dealership cannot sell the vehicles until the converters are replaced.
