CORTLAND -- A city police officer is at St. Joseph Warren Hospital after suffering a "medical event" Saturday evening and crashing his vehicle on state Route 5 near McDonald's and Circle K, according to police Chief David Morris.

Morris said the Bazetta Police Department and Trumbull County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.

The chief also said several civilians stopped to assist the officer and performed CPR until the fire department arrived.

"We extend our thanks to them and ask that they contact Cortland police at 330-675-2730 as soon as possible," Morris posted on the department's Facebook page.

Morris said the Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation and no further information is being released at this time.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a Trumbull County 911 call log. The ambulance arrived within 12 minutes of the initial call, the 911 report states.

The 911 report states the Niles Police Department was sent to notify Nancy Mancini, the victim's mother, who lives on Hartzell Drive. There is a Cortland police officer named Nicholas Mancini, according to the department's website.

Morris did not identify the name of the injured officer.

The report states no contact was made by Niles police, but the officer's wife was at the hospital. The officer was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital around 7:30 p.m., the report states.
