WHAT: Niles City Schools Board of Education regular meeting Thursday
PRESENT: President Mary Ann McMahon, Bobby Seifert, Rebecca DePanicis, Susan Giannetti Longacre, Tony Perrone, Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen, and acting treasurer Lori Simione
The board:
• Approved no fees for Niles Middle School and Niles Elementary, grades K-5. For Niles McKinley High School, $10 fees were approved for Microsoft Office suite, advanced biology I and II, advanced physical science, advanced physics, and environmental science, $15 fees were approved for advanced chemistry and student parking passes, and $50 fees were approved for Art I, II, III, and IV;
• Accepted donations of $266.60 from Covelli (JAC) to multiple athletic boosters, $400 from Advantage Promotions to the athletic department and $218 from Sons of Italy to the girls soccer boosters;
• Approved 13 purchase orders for a total of $187,555.78;
• Approved a $80,000 then-and-now purchase order for Western Reserve Mechanical for a replacement walk-in cooler, which has been approved as a National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistant Grant;
• Approved Holly Gibson-Blackburn’s resignation as a school nurse, effective July 26;
• Hired Shannon Semple as a districtwide school nurse and granted her a one-year limited contract, effective Aug. 23, to fill a position open due to a resignation;
• Approved six extended days for the school nurse at per diem rate for the 2019-20 school year;
• Approved Effie Straheim’s resignation as the assistant marching band director, effective Aug. 1. The position has been posted;
• Approved Dawn Davis’ resignation as the seventh grade girls volleyball coach, effective Aug. 6;
• Approved the appointment of substitute teachers, substitute school nurses and home instructors on an as-needed basis for the 2019-20 school year;
• Hired Elyssa Walker as a guidance counselor at Niles Primary and Niles Intermediate schools and granted her a one-year limited contract for the 2019-20 school year to fill a position open due to a resignation;
• Hired Mary Wike as an intervention specialist at Niles Middle School and granted her a one-year limited contract for the 2019-20 school year, effective Aug. 23, to fill a position open due to a resignation;
• Hired Melissa Raeburn as an intervention specialist at Niles Intermediate School and granted her a one-year limited contract for the 2019-20 school year, effective Aug. 23, to fill a position open due to a resignation;
• Appointed Douglas Foster and Matthew Masincupp as volunteer football coaches;
• Approved the agreement between RTH Strategic Planning and Consulting, LLC, effective through June 30, 2020;
• Set the next Board of Education meeting for 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at Niles McKinley High School.
