Charges dismissed against woman in false alarm case

WARREN — Charges filed against a woman accused of making false alarms when she tried to convince police her estranged husband was going to shoot up a Howland school were dismissed Thursday in Warren Municipal Court.

Vanessa Ackely, 41, Glen Oaks Drive, was facing two counts of making false alarms. Both charges were dismissed at the request of Warren prosecutor Gil Blair.

Blair said the case would have been expensive to prosecute because many of the expert witnesses who helped prosecutors build the case against her are from out of the area and the court would have had to pay to bring them in. And, Ackely already spent 80 days in jail on the charges, Blair said. The charges were originally filed as felonies by Howland police, but a Trumbull County grand jury reduced it to misdemeanors.

Blair said Ackley agreed to pay the court costs, which is approximately $350.
