WARREN -- Police are investigating the shooting death of D'Anthony Williams, 22, who was found shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday in a field between two houses on West Avenue NW.
No suspects have been arrested.
Police responded to several calls made about 8 a.m. to Trumbull County 911 that reported hearing four to five gunshots in the direction of the northwest neighborhood.
One caller said she saw a person wearing a gray hoodie and jeans run to and enter a two-door, dark-colored vehicle with tinted windows. The car drove toward North Park Avenue.
An ambulance transported Williams to Trumbull Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 a.m.
It's the first murder of 2019 in Warren.
"Every homicide is troubling," Lt. Martin Gargas said. "To have one this early in the year, we're a little worried."
However, Gargas emphasized there will be more officers on the streets to help keep neighborhoods safer once the department's rookie officers complete their training periods.
Matthew Simmons, 782 West Ave., said he had just dropped off his child at school when a friend called saying there had been a shooting near his home.
"This is something that really doesn't happen on this street," Simmons said. "We occasionally will hear gunshots, but we have not had anything like this. There have been problems on the other side of North Park, but not over here. We've always felt pretty safe."
Richard Higley, 26, agreed, saying the neighborhood has been family-friendly.
"During the summer, we have 30 to 40 kids out playing basketball and throwing footballs back-and-forth," he described. "There are parents looking out for the children in the neighborhood."
Higley called the shooting concerning.
"I know if something happens to my children, I would not react well," he said.
