WEATHERSFIELD – The wife of a man accused of killing another man Tuesday evening at 3518 Main St. ran from the home with her daughter to a nearby fast food restaurant, where she called police from a borrowed phone, according to a 911 call recording.

Candace Latimer told police dispatchers in Mahoning County her husband, Richard, “shot a man with a gun,” at the home near Mineral Ridge High School, and she drove with her daughter, 9, to Taco Bell in Austintown.

“He took my phone, I have no shoes on my feet,” Candace Latimer told a police dispatcher.

“The man is there, I saw him (Richard Latimer) shoot him and he made me and my daughter leave the house,” Candace Latimer said. “He tried to get in the car with us. I locked the doors and took off down the street and I came to where there were people ’cause I don’t have a phone.”

Candace Latimer told police the man who shot and killed was Van Blevins, 44, who address is the Main Street home. The shooting happened at about 7 p.m.

About two hours later, a man was shot outside Giant Eagle in Howland in a police involved shooting. Police in Weathersfield said the two incidents are connected.

“At this time, the suspect of the homicide in Weathersfield Township is believed to be the individual involved in the incident in Howland Township,” a news release from the police department states.

Names of the police officers are not being released, nor is the name of the man shot and killed. He died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
