Dispute between off-duty firefighter, tenant heats up
HOWLAND — A dispute between an off-duty Niles firefighter and his tenant turned physical in a property management office, a Howland police report states.
No one was charged in the incident, according to court records.
Howland police were called 1:49 p.m. Friday to All City Property, 3430 Niles Road SE, after a man said he was thrown to the ground.
David Whitfield, 16 N. Cedar Ave., called police and said he was at the property office to ask his landlord for the return of a $50 down payment for the installation of a satellite that he never received.
Rodney Freel, a captain with the Niles Fire Department, told police the tenants owed him money and so he was going to keep it, the report states.
Whitfield told police the two argued and he refused to leave Freel’s office until he got the cash back, according to the report.
Both men reported the other grabbed him first.
According to Freel, Whitfield grabbed him by the shirt, so he grabbed Whitfield by the shirt, pushed him away and threw him to the ground, letting him up after Whitfield agreed to leave.
According to Whitfield, Freel grabbed him by the neck and the coat, threw him to the ground and and held him there until Freel complied to his request to let go of him, the police report states.
Whitfield left the building and called police, according to the report.
Police took pictures of the red marks on Whitfield’s neck, the report states.
