WARREN TOWNSHIP – As the holiday season imprints the reality of her mother’s January disappearance on her life, a township teen is begging anyone with information to come forward.
Kimberly Toboz, 39, was last seen leaving her 21 N. Leavitt Road home on the morning of Jan. 21, wearing slippers and pajamas. The Honda CRV she was driving was recovered from behind a small strip mall in Boardman in February.
“I feel like someone out there knows something,” Amber Toboz, 18, said.
Warren Township police Chief Don Bishop said they found no clues in the car, which appeared to have been cleaned recently. He said it was checked and nothing suspicious was found in it. Bishop said it was not fingerprinted.
Holding back tears, Amber said she kept paying her mother’s phone bill for months after she vanished, hoping she would use it eventually or answer it. She said the phone went straight to voicemail any time she called until about a month ago, when someone answered. Amber thinks the phone number may have been passed on to a new wireless user.
Bishop said the case is still very much active even though a lot of their ideas have been exhausted. There are leads investigators are scheduled to chase in the new year, including a possible connection to West Virginia.
Amber said her mother wouldn’t have gone to West Virginia to visit her brother without bringing her, taking anything with her or at least telling her. Toboz’ clothes for a job interview she was “really excited about” were laid out, along with jewelry and makeup, Amber said. The interview was scheduled for later that day.
Her mother has had issues with drugs, Amber said, but has always stayed in contact with her, borrowing phones at times to stay in touch. Bishop said she recently got out of a rehab facility before going missing.
Bishop said he has alerts out for Toboz, with many different agencies and with every variation he could think of for her name. Toboz is white with brown hair, brown eyes, wears glasses and is 5-foot-2, police said.
“We hope we find her, we are trying to find her,” Bishop said. “We hope it isn’t a worst case scenario, but something is not right.”
Amber posts messages to her mother on Facebook. She said she is worried she owed the wrong person money and may have been killed, that she overdosed and someone disposed of her body, or she is stuck somewhere.
