WARREN – A Warren native with a long military history will serve as the featured speaker today at the Trumbull County Veterans Day ceremony.
Maj. General Simeon Trombitas, a 1973 Lordstown High School graduate, served as commanding general of Special Operations Command in Korea before assuming command of the Iraq National Counter-Terrorism Force Transition Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Trombitas was appointed deputy commanding general for U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) in August. He is stationed at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
He will share his insights at the county Veterans Day commemoration at 11 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave. N.W. The ceremony, sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle, will be followed by a parade stepping off at approximately 12:15 p.m.
His worldwide journey with the U.S. Army began with his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy in 1978 . He was then commissioned as a U.S. Army second lieutenant in the Infantry Branch. His education continued with a master’s degree in Securities Technology from the Army War College.
Trombitas’ active duty began as an infantry Platoon Leader in the 2nd Armored Division in Ford Hood, Texas. Trombitas quickly progressed through the military ranking and has led a military career around the globe.
Trombitas served stints as senior adviser to the 4th El Salvadorian Infantry Brigade, assistant deputy director for operations of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, deputy director of operations with the Special Operations Command in Panama, commander of the U.S. Military Group in Columbia, and chief regional special operations division in Washington, D.C. Before his new appointment, he was commanding general, United States Army South.
His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with “V” device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab and Special Forces Tab.
