YOUNGSTOWN – A 20-year-old city woman died Monday morning from massive head injuries after she was struck by two vehicles along Interstate 680, according to the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.
Dr. Joseph Ohr, deputy coroner, reported that Nicole Baird, 20, of Youngstown, died at the scene.
Youngstown police continued looking Monday afternoon for the second vehicle that hit Baird after the driver fled from the scene.
Reports state that Baird was traveling along Interstate 680 when she hit a bag of leaves around 5:45 a.m. She stopped her vehicle in the northbound passing lane near the Shirley Road exit to remove the bag from under her vehicle.
Baird was first hit by a vehicle traveling north. The impact caused her to fly over the cement barrier into the southbound lane of the interstate. She was then hit by a second vehicle.
The driver of the first vehicle that hit Baird called police.
Ohr reported that his examination of Baird’s body revealed that she died instantly. However, he did not specify whether her death resulted from the impact of the first vehicle or the second one that hit her. The person who first hit Baird claimed he was talking to her when the second vehicle hit her.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 680 were shut down and the northbound lanes were restricted for several hours as crews cleared the scene. All lanes on the highway opened around 9 a.m.
