NILES – Three family pets died in a house fire and a fourth is missing, but no residents were injured in the fire this morning in downtown Niles.
City fire crews were called to the home at 726 N. Main St. just after 8 a.m. Friday.
No one was home when the fire started. Chief John Stevens said the homeowner told firefighters four cats were inside. Three of the pets perished and were located by firefighters when they arrived. The fourth cat was not located.
Assistance was offered to the family, a woman and two children, by the American Red Cross, Stevens said. He added the family also has relatives to stay with.
No cause has yet been determined.
The fire damaged mainly the kitchen area, but smoke and heat damage is throughout most of the house, according to fire officials.
