$750k bond set for former Warren policeman accused of rape and burglary

Michael Edwards Jr.

WARREN — A $750,000 bond was set for former city policeman Michael Edwards Jr. when he appeared in Warren Municipal Court this morning.

Edwards Jr. is facing multiple felony charges which include two counts of rape and two counts of aggravated burglary. Edwards Jr. pleaded not guilty during his arraignment this morning.

Judge Patricia Knepp issued a no-contact order with the victim “either directly or indirectly.” Edwards is set to appear for another court hearing on Feb 8.

During a Monday afternoon press conference, Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel said the department had reviewed the “criminal nature” of a woman’s complaint against Edwards Jr. on Jan. 20 before notifying the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).

Merkel said Edwards Jr. was supposed to come into the department for an interview when BCI agents arrested Edwards Jr.

The alleged offenses occurred Jan. 19, according to court records.

Merkel said he believes the incident was a “one-time” occurrence with the alleged victim but encouraged anyone else who may have additional complaints against Edwards to come forward.

The Ohio Attorney General’s office is also asking those with information to contact BCI at 855-224-6446.

Starting at $3.23/week.
