NEWTON FALLS – Newton Falls Mayor Ken Kline submitted his resignation effective immediately during Monday’s special council meeting.
Kline said he was resigning to accept a position in the juvenile justice field; however, he did not state further details. Kline, who also serves as pastor at Newton Falls Assembly of God, said he was resigning from that post as well.
Councilman John Baryak will serve as mayor in the interim.
While council members voted to accept Kline’s resignation, the legality of that vote is in question because the matter did not appear on the special meeting agenda. Under Ohio Sunshine laws, special meetings must not stray from specific items appearing on the advance agenda.
Discussions about a contract extension and large pay increase for City Manager Pam Priddy, which was expected to occur at Monday’s meeting, did not go forward after two of the five council members left the meeting following Kline’s resignation.
