YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney football coach Carl Pelini turned himself in to Boardman police this morning on an assault charge stemming from a reported domestic violence.
Pelini pleaded not guilty and was released after posting a $2,500 bond, according to court records.
He was ordered to stay away from the victim, and his case is being transferred to Canfield court.
An arrest warrant was issued for Pelini following a call about a domestic violence early Sunday. He turned himself in about 7:30 this morning, according to reports.
A Boardman police report states officers were called to the 8400 block of Ivy Hill Drive at 2:39 a.m. Sunday "for a domestic between husband / wife." A caller told police dispatch that her parents were fighting, and the father left in a white Ford Escape.
The woman told police, "… he just hit me."
Officials at Cardinal Mooney confirmed Monday that Pelini has been placed on administrative leave and that coach Mike Tucci will take over the program as interim head coach. Associate athletic director, Jim Jablonski, will continue to serve as associate athletic director.
