Girard man faces charges after chase

NILES -­ A Girard man is facing failure to comply and felonious assault charges after he was accused of stealing a vehicle and trying to ram it into a police cruiser Sunday morning.

David Marice Copes, 23, of East Main Street, Girard, was arraigned today in Niles Municipal Court. A preliminary hearing on the assault will be 9:15 a.m. Wednesday. Bond was set at $500,000.

A report states police were called to Days Inn about 11 a.m Sunday as a 22-year-old woman was being assaulted. The stolen vehicle, a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, rammed into a cruiser, but no one was injured.

Police said that the suspect, David Marice William Copes, 23, hit an officer’s cruiser with the stolen vehicle, disabling it. The man ran from the scene and through the efforts of a police dog, other police jurisdictions and a ping of AT&T cell phones, the report states Copes was arrested at an apartment on Royal Mall Drive in Niles.

Jail records show Copes remained incarcerated.
